GREENSBORO, N.C. - Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year Barden Berry of North Carolina leads the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Berry, a senior Psychology major, is a three-time ACC All-Academic team selection, an ESPN Third-Team All-American at large, three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a member of the North Carolina Honors Program. This year he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Berry received the 2008 University of North Carolina Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award as well as being the recipient of the McCaskill Award, given for excellence in athletics, scholarship and community service and receiving the Carolina Leadership Academy's highest honor, the Three-Dimensional Leader Award. Berry was a starter in all 11 of North Carolina's tournaments in 2007-08 and carded four top-20 finishes and nine rounds under-par.
Three golfers who earned All-Conference honors this past season secured spots on the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Golf Team. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Players earning All-Conference honors in 2008 were Florida State's Jonas Blixt, Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale, and Virginia Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart.
Boston College was represented by four players while Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia Tech claimed three players each. ACC Champion Florida State along with Duke claimed two honorees, while Clemson, Maryland and Wake Forest landed one player each to round out the 20-member team.
Ten golfers were repeat honorees from the 2007 All-ACC Academic team, which includes Boston College's James Granello, Jan Prokop and Robert Reed, Clemson's Ben Martin, Duke's Adam Long, Georgia Tech's Taylor Hall and Cameron Tringale, North Carolina's Barden Berry, Virginia Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart and Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow.
