BLACKSBURG, Va. - J.J. Larson, a senior from Orchard Park, N.Y., has been selected as the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship. Larson is one of eight women's tennis players to receive the regional honor and is now eligible for the national award to be announced on May 20, in Tulsa, Okla., the site of the 2008 NCAA Men's and Women's Championships.
The award is given to a women's tennis player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, and who has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. Larson won 70 singles and 69 doubles victories in her career.
"We are so excited for J.J. to receive the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award for the East Region. It is a well deserved award because J.J. has always represented Virginia Tech with class and has been an inspiration to so many people," said Virginia Tech head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. "I am very proud of J.J. for all of her accomplishments and I am pleased for her to end her career as a Hokie with this award."
