Atlantic Coast Conference Announces 2008 Men's Tennis Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia grabbed two of the three individual awards and three schools placed a trio of honorees on the 19-member All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Team for 2008, as announced by the league office Thursday. Regular-season champion Virginia, North Carolina and Florida State led all schools, while Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest each received a pair of all-conference picks. Georgia Tech and Miami rounded out this year's squad with one nod apiece.

Virginia's Somdev Devvarman was the unanimous choice for ACC Player of the Year. The senior sensation has been instrumental for the Cavaliers, who recorded three undefeated seasons (2005, 2007-08) in league play during his career at Virginia. The native from Chennai, India, has been the nation's No. 1 singles and doubles player in every ranking this season, finishing with a perfect 11-0 mark and a 10-1 doubles record in conference action. Devvarman became only the second Cavalier to earn the league's top honor and the first since 2001.

ACC Freshman of the Year honors went to Georgia Tech's Guillermo Gomez. The native from Alicante, Spain, became the first Yellow Jacket to garner the league's top rookie accolade. Gomez registered identical 7-4 ledgers in both singles and doubles action during league play in 2008.

Receiving his second career league recognition, Virginia's Brian Boland was tabbed ACC Coach of the Year. He led the Cavaliers to their second-straight ACC regular-season title and fourth overall, as they compiled a perfect 11-0 record in conference action for the second year in a row. Boland and his top-seeded Cavaliers will look to capture a second league crown at this week's Championship.

The 2008 ACC Men's Tennis Championship begins today at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Coverage of the four-day tournament will be made available On-Demand every night by 9 p.m. on ACC Select from April 17-20.
