Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech senior hitter Jen Albrecht, senior libero Amanda Cloyd and junior middle blocker Kristen Cunningham were named to the 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Volleyball Team, announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Albrecht, a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III First Team member, is completing a dual major in biochemistry and human, nutrition, foods and exercise, while minoring in both Spanish and chemistry. Albrecht had a standout season for the Hokies, landing 229 kills, hitting .208 and collecting 63 blocks. Earlier this season, she landed a career-high 17 kills in Tech's 3-1 win over NC State and collected a career-high eight digs in the Hokies' 3-1 win over Fairfield.
Cloyd was one of 17 repeat honorees from a year ago on the 32-player list. The human nutrition, foods & exercise major broke Tech's single-season digs record for three straight seasons and ended her career with 2,220 digs to rank as the ACC's all-time leader for career digs per game (4.77) and finished tied with Duke's Jenny Shull for the conference's all-time dig record.
Cunningham is a communication major from Fairfax Station, Va., who was second on the team with 1.42 blocks per game and also averaged 2.22 kills per game. Cunningham came up with a career-high 11 blocks against Georgia Tech on Nov. 12, 2007.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Leading all schools with five selections to this year's All-Academic team is Duke. All five Blue Devils were named to last year's team.
Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, and North Carolina also added three members to the team. Virginia and Wake Forest each claim two team members, while Florida State and NC State had one each. Maryland's Beth Gillming, Virginia's Sarah Kirkwood, Wake Forest's Natalie Mullikin and Georgia Tech's Stegemann join the team as three-time honorees, each having been a part of the inaugural All-ACC Academic Volleyball team for 2005.
