North Carolina A&T claims consolation game over Lafayette

BLACKSBURG, Va. North Carolina A&T escaped with a 65-63 win over Lafayette in the consolation game of the 19th annual Hokie Hardwood Classic on Tuesday evening at Cassell Coliseum.

The Aggies improved to 6-4 with the victory, while the Leopards fell to 5-9.

A&T led by as many as 12 points with just under eight minutes remaining, but Lafayette went on a 14-6 run, which included eight points by Cristin Zavocki, to cut the deficit to 4 at 63-59 with 25 ticks on the clock.

A&T’s Ta’Wuana Cook made it a 5-point advantage with a free throw five seconds later, but an Elizabeth Virgin jumper and a LaKeisha Wright layup quickly got Lafayette within one, 64-63, with 10 seconds remaining.

The Leopards then fouled A&T’s Amber Bland with seven ticks left and she hit one of two free throws to set the final score, as Lafayette failed to get a shot off before the final buzzer.

Wright led the Leopards with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and an 8-of-11 effort from the charity stripe, while Zavocki finished with 13 points.

Cook paced the Aggies with 17 points, while Bland added 16 and Brittanie Taylor-James chipped in with 15.
