Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. – Seven Hokie wrestlers advanced to quarterfinal matches and five more remain in the consolation bracket after day one of the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C., on Monday. Tech sits in second place in the tournament with 44 points, just behind Cal State Bakersfield, who is in first with 44.5 points.
The underclassmen made a big impact in the tournament with five sophomores and two freshman advancing to the quarterfinals. Sophomores Will Livingston at 133 lbs., top-seeded Chris Diaz at 141 lbs., fifth-seeded Matt Epperly at 165 lbs., seventh-seeded Tommy Spellman at 184 lbs., and David Marone at the heavyweight class all went undefeated through day one. Freshmen Brock LiVorio and Pete Yates rounded out the Hokies earning spots in the quarterfinals, at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively.
Five more Hokies will also compete tomorrow in the consolation bracket. Freshmen Jarrod Garnett at 125 lbs., Jesse Dong at 157 lbs., Anthony Trongone at 174 lbs., sophomore D.J. Bruce at 197 lbs. and junior Tim Miller at 197 lbs., all look to score key team points in tomorrow’s consolation matches.
Cornell, ranked tied for third in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA National Ranking, sits in third place in the competition with 43.5 points, followed Kent State and Edinboro in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Kent State racked up 41.5 points on the day, while Edinboro earned 40.5.
