GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech freshman guard Shanel Harrison has been named ACC Rookie of the Week, for the week ending Dec. 14, 2008. Harrison becomes the second Tech women’s basketball player to win the weekly award since the Hokies joined the ACC.
Harrison recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds in Virginia Tech’s 72-70 overtime win Sunday versus visiting James Madison. After JMU hit a trey with three seconds left in the game to give the Dukes a 62-60 lead, Harrison was fouled on a desperation three-point from beyond half court. The freshman stepped to the line with 0.1 remaining in regulation and hit 2-of-3 free throws to force overtime. The rookie from Olney, Md., then pulled down a defensive rebound on JMU’s final possession of overtime to secure the victory.
Tech (6-2) will travel Texas this week to participate in the South Padre Island Shootout. The Hokies will face IUPUI in a 6 p.m. (ET) first round contest on Friday, Dec. 19. The other participants in the event are Jacksonville University and Southern Methodist. The winners of Friday’s games will meet at 8 p.m. (ET) Saturday for the championship with the consolation game scheduled to tip at 6 p.m. (ET).
