H2Okies post four wins at the Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The H2Okies concluded its second day of swimming and diving action at the Tennessee Invitational. Both teams are currently in second place with the men scoring 208 points, while the women posted 286.5 points. The squads competed in the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free, while the divers performed in a separate meet called the Alan Jones Diving Invitational at the same venue.

For the men, the team of senior Ian deToll, along with a trio of sophomores that included Stephen Hawkins, Zach Holmes and Richard Ulatowski placed second in the 200 free relay. The four-some posted a time of 1:19.82, .45 seconds off the Virginia Tech school record, and claimed 34 points.

Meanwhile, the team of seniors Sara Smith, Megan Newell, Jordan McHorney and sophomore Kaleigh Gomes swam in the 200 free relay, touching in with a time of 1:30.87 for a first place finish and 40 team points. In the process, the H2Okie women, ranked 25th nationally, broke the Virginia Tech school record in the event set last season.

In the 200 IM Smith captured her third victory of the season, posting a time of 2:01.14. The senior also won the 50 free and claimed a total of 40 points for H2Okies. Smith came in with a time of 22.44, while posting her first win of the season in the event.

Sophomore Lauren Ritter placed second in the women’s 500 free, to claim an additional 17 points for Tech. The Sterling, Va. native crossed the line in 4:51.62, bettering her preliminary time by .30 seconds.

In diving action junior Mikey McDonald won the 1-meter event with a score of 374.55 to add 20 points to the men’s score, while freshman Cara Murnan and sophomore Sarah Milton placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3-meter action for the women. The former scored 294.05 with the latter tallying 292.20.

The H2Okies will continue competition and its third day of action at the Tennessee Invitational. The Tech men and women will race in the 100 back, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, 400 IM and the 400-medley relay.
