Fanning named Southeast Region Athlete of the Year

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech senior Tasmin Fanning received Division I Southeast Region Women’s Athlete of the Year, as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday.

Fanning won the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 15, crossing the line 20:07.8. The regional championship was a first for any Hokie cross country runner, male or female, to capture an automatic bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, her third consecutive trip to the national meet.

The victory also earned the Charlottesville, Va., native a fourth all-region honor, another first in program history. The performance helped Fanning win ACC Performer of the Week this week by the conference, the second time this season she earned the award.

Fanning will finish her Hokie cross country career with the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind. The Western Albermarle High alum will look to improve on her All-American 12th-place effort at last season’s national meet. Results will be posted on hokiesports.com following the meet.
