Garnett wins collegiate debut at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C. Ten members of the Virginia Tech wrestling team opened their seasons Saturday at the Wolfpack Open, hosted by NC State at Reynolds Coliseum. Per NCAA rules, only six wrestlers were allowed to represent Tech while the rest had to compete unattached, meaning their results do not count.

Several Hokies had impressive days, highlighted by Jarrod Garnett at 125 pounds and Will Livingston at 133 pounds. Garnett was perfect on the day in capturing the title while Livingston took second place. At 149 pounds, Nick Murray made it to the semifinals before falling to No. 5 Lance Palmer of Ohio State. He fell in the third-place match to finish fourth.

Garnett, who lost out to teammate Brock LiVorio in the team’s wrestle-offs last week, bounced back nicely in his first collegiate action. The Newark, Del., native went 5-0 on the day, highlighted by a 7-1 upset over No. 12 Nikko Triggas of Ohio State in the semifinals. Garnett started his career with a technical fall and then picked up a decision, a forfeit and then the upset Triggas to reach the finals. There, he downed fellow ACC competitor Taylor Cummings of NC State, 8-6, to claim the title.

Livingston, who is sitting out this semester after transferring from Ohio State, opened with a technical fall before picking up three decisions to reach the championship. Wrestling unattached, he took on former OSU teammate and fifth-ranked Reece Humphrey in the finals and was downed 9-4.

Freshman Schuyler Swanton went 4-2 on the day. After losing his first match, the Spring Hill, Fla., native ripped off four wins in the consolation brackets. Freshman walk-on Scott Chene, from Irvine, Calif., also had a good day as he went 3-2. He put up a good fight against defending national champion and current No. 1 J Jaggers of Ohio State, falling 3-0.

Matt Rosen went 4-1 at 149 pounds. He won his first two matches before losing to No. 5 Darrion Caldwell. He bounced back to win two matches in the consolations before forfeiting to fellow Hokie Nick Murray. Murray wrestled unattached and went 4-2 on the day.

The Tech team will open up its season Sunday with a dual meet against George Mason at Cassell Coliseum. Match time is set for 5 o’clock.
