Cunningham named to Academic All-District team

BLACKSBURG, Va.- Senior middle blocker Kristin Cunningham of the Virginia Tech volleyball team received ESPN the Magazine 2008 second-team Academic All-District III honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

The honor continues Cunningham’s record of academic excellence. The Fairfax Station, Va., native was a member of the All-ACC academic team in 2007, one of only six Hokies to be selected for the honor. Cunningham, a communication major, is also a force on the team, ranking third on the team in hitting percentage, striking at a .292 clip, and total blocks with 49.

Cunningham and the rest of the Hokies will take on NC State and North Carolina on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Results will be posted on hokiesports.com following the matches.

To be eligible for a spot on the ESPN the Magazine all-district squad, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30, on a 4.0 scale, and must be a starter or an important reserve. A student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution, and in the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
