BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Three members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will travel to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend to participate in the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The 48-player field consists of 18 ranked singles players in the event, which is being held at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus. If necessary due to inclement weather, matches will be moved indoors to the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The singles field is highlighted by three players that competed in last year’s NCAA Singles Championship. That group consists of 2008 NCAA Runner-Up J.P. Smith of Tennessee, along with Austen Childs of Louisville and Enrique Oliveras of East Tennessee State.
Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 75 nationally, received a first round bye in the A-1 singles draw and will play the winner of Hendrik Stahmer (Nebraska)/Bryan Swartz (Tennessee) Friday afternoon. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Crotia), winner of last week’s Steve Baras Fall Collegiate Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn., will face Leif Sunderland (Virginia) in his first A-1 match Friday morning. Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) will see his first action of the fall season in the A-2 bracket against Abdullah Magdas (South Carolina).
Delgado de Robles/Somen will face Matt Kecki/Magdas (South Carolina) in their first A-1 doubles match, while Graber will team with Virginia’s Sunderland in the A-3 doubles. The Commonweath duo will open against Davey Sandgren/Joh-Patrick Smith (Tennessee).
Play at the event, which has two 24-player singles draws and three 8-team doubles draws, begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. The action begins each day at 9 a.m.
