Tincher nominated for ESPY

The 2008 ESPY nominees were announced Tuesday morning with former Hokie Angela Tincher earning a nod as one of three candidates for "Best Female College Athlete" where she is up against Tennessee women's basketball player Candace Parker and University of North Carolina field hockey player Rachel Dawson. All three were finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup with Parker winning that award.

"I'm really, really excited and honored to up for this award," Tincher said. "What an incredible opportunity this is, to be around so many great athletes in all the different sports. It's an honor to be nominated with Candace Parker and Rachel Dawson for college female athlete of the year. This has been a great year for me and this certainly ranks up there as a highlight. But it's also great to be able to represent Virginia Tech one more time."

The show will be aired on ESPN and ESPNHD on Sunday, July 20 at 9 p.m., Eastern from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The show is being hosted by Justin Timberlake.

Fans' voting determines the winners in 37 different categories, from Team of the Year to Upset of the Year and from Best Athlete With a Disability to Best Bowler. Fans can go to http://espys.tv to vote. You must sign up as part of espn.com, but the process is free, and then fans must vote for all 37 categories.

Tincher is currently playing for the Akron Racers of the NPF. The Racers are in fourth place at 8-8, but have won seven of their last nine contests. Tincher, the 2008 USA Softball National Player of the Year, is 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched. She is second in the league in wins and fifth in strikeouts.

She no-hit the Washington Glory last month in her second start. The Racers host league-leading Philadelphia this week in a four-game set at Firestone Stadium.
