Campus Tailgating Generator Use Guidelines

These guidelines establish requirements for the safe use of portable and temporary generators during campus tailgating activities.

  1. Applicability

These guidelines apply to all campus-controlled tailgating areas:

  • Portable gasoline, propane, diesel, or inverter generators.
  • Trailer-mounted temporary generators.
  1. General Safety Requirements

Approved Equipment

  • Generators shall be limited to 2500 Watts capacity and shall be “Silent Type”, limited to 65dB.
  • Generators shall be listed and manufactured for portable or temporary power applications.

Electrical Safety

  • Equipment shall be maintained in safe operating condition and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Generators shall only power portable equipment and appliances.
  • Ground fault protection shall be utilized.
  • Extension cords shall be rated for outdoor use and the connected load.

Prohibited Activities

  • Operating generators inside buildings, tents, or enclosed spaces.
  • Refueling while equipment is operating.
  • Damaged extension cords, plugs, receptacles, or fuel systems shall not be used.
  • Running extension cords across roadways or accessible routes without approved protection.
  1. Generator Location Requirements
  • Generators shall be placed a minimum of 20 feet from occupied tents, canopies, recreational vehicles, and gathering areas. Also 20 feet from building entrances, windows, air intakes, and operable openings.
  1. Enforcement

University officials, Facilities Operations personnel, Environmental Health and Safety staff, Fire Safety personnel, and law enforcement may require correction, relocation, or shutdown of any generator.
