Storylines to Know:
Another test awaits the Hokies – on offense and defense – this weekend.
Saturday’s matchup against the Cavaliers will mark the fourth ranked team the Hokies have faced in six games. Virginia, who is led by head coach Tony Elliott in his fourth year with the team, has guided the program to its first appearance in the AP Top 25 since the 2019 season.
Virginia has achieved its national ranking and a 9-2 record (6-1 ACC) behind impressive play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The offense, which is led by dual-threat quarterback Chandler Morris, sits fourth overall in the conference at 33.7 points per game while the defense ranks sixth overall with just 21.2 points allowed per contest.
Saturday’s matchup features high-volume runners on both sides.
Entering the primetime contest this weekend, the Hokies have been fueled by impressive running back play from both Marcellous Hawkins Jr. and Terion Stewart. The pair are first and third in yards among the Hokie offense respectively, oftentimes contributing in a plethora of ways for exciting offensive gains.
On the opposing side of the field, the Cavaliers utilize starting running back J’Mari Taylor in virtually every possible scenario. The graduate student has posted 15 or more rushes in eight consecutive games and in nine of 11 matchups, resulting in a team-high 917 rushing yards in the 2025 season (4.9 yards per carry). His 133 yards and two scores against the Duke Blue Devils - one of which being a 78-yard house call in the third quarter this past weekend were paramount in the team’s 34-17 win.
Players to Watch:
Wide Receiver Ayden Greene
Wideout Ayden Greene has become a deep-threat weapon for the Hokies in what is his junior campaign this season. His five-catch, 95-yard performance against the Hurricanes’ secondary led the Hokies offense, bringing the Tennessee native’s season yardage total to a team-high 516 receiving yards. If the wideout can tally an average catch of 17 or more yards against Virginia this weekend, the feat will mark the sixth consecutive game in which the big-play threat has done so.
Linebacker Noah Chambers
In his first year at Virginia Tech, freshman linebacker Noah Chambers has been a persistent force for the Lunch Pail Defense. The Maryland native posted a team-high eight tackles (two solo) against Miami this past weekend, the game marking his fifth consecutive start in 2025. Through seven appearances, the linebacker has 36 total tackles and a pair of pass breakups, pass deflections and quarterback hits each.
