Tech drops a heartbreaker to No. 33 Notre Dame

Mulready, Frosch and Gorinsek all pick up singles wins.

BLACKSBURG – The Hokies drop a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 33 Notre Dame on Friday afternoon.

Once again, Mila Mulready, Laima Frosch, and Tara Gorinsek are the three Hokies to pick up singles wins.

In doubles, Arina Gamretkaia and Gorinsek started off Tech with a 6-3 win over Beckman/Matsuno of the Fighting Irish. The other two Hokies’ doubles pairs dropped to give Notre Dame the doubles point.

Down 3-0 in singles, the Hokies needed wins in the third set on all four of the remaining courts. Mulready was the first Hokie to secure her third set and match, with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Carrie Beckman. Frosch followed close behind with a near-identical scoreline, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over Rylie Hanford.

With the score sitting at 3-2 in the match, Gorinsek battled after going down 6-3 in the first set to win the following two, 6-3, 6-4.

Özlem Uslu was the final court to finish, ultimately falling in a three-set battle with No. 101 Akari Matsuno 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.

UP NEXT: The Hokies finish off their home slate with an ACC match-up with Louisville on Sunday afternoon at noon. Virginia Tech Women’s Tennis will celebrate senior day after the match on Sunday.
