SALEM, Va. – No. 15/17 Virginia Tech (14-4) split its doubleheader with Villanova (6-9) on the first day of the Hokie Invite at the Moyer Sports Complex.

The Hokies were an offensive powerhouse in the first game as they tied the program record for the most home runs in a single game with eight. With Michelle Chatfield, Emma Mazzarone and Bre Peck each hitting two home runs, it became the first time in program history that three players have hit two home runs in a game.

Virginia Tech had five different players hit home runs. Peck’s second homer tied the program team home run record, at eight. Jayden Jones and Rachel Castine added one long ball each, as well.

How it Happened: Virginia Tech 18, Villanova 2 (Game One)
The Hokies shined on offense and defense as Cori McMillan’s incredible diving catch in foul territory set the tone.

Emma Mazzarone got on the board early with a two-run shot to center field. Jayden Jones and Michelle Chatfield each hit two-run home runs in the same inning – putting the Hokies up 6-0 after the second.

The offense did not stop there as Rachel Castine and Bre Peck each joined the home run party with solo shots. Chatfield hit her second home run of the game with her solo shot to left field in the third.

Despite the Wildcats getting two on the board in the fourth, Mazzarone and Peck each tallied their second home run of the day in the fourth inning to seal the 18-2 win.

How It Happened: Villanova 7, Virginia Tech 6 (Game Two)
The Wildcats took a commanding 7-0 lead after Villanova’s Elaina Waghorn hit a grand slam in the top of the third inning. The Hokies, however, did not go down without a fight.

Cori McMillan hit her first home run of the day in the bottom of the third and the Hokies added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jordan Lynch cranked a two-run home run to make it a 7-6 but the Hokies could not tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.
