RALEIGH, NC --Junior Emma Lemley struck out eight NC State hitters over six innings of work, but it was not enough as the No. 15/13 Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the Wolfpack 5-4.
In addition to her eight strikeouts, Lemley (7-4) went six innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on five hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (26-9-1).
At the plate, the Hokies were led by senior Addy Greene, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Kylie Aldridge furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Junior Cori McMillan also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech got an RBI single from McMillan, scoring senior Emma Ritter from third base.
The Hokies lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 2-1. Virginia Tech scored twice on Aldridge's two-run homer, which brought the Hokies lead to 3-2.
Virginia Tech's lead had evaporated by the time the seventh inning came around and turned into a 5-3 NC State advantage, when the Hokies cut that deficit to 5-4. The Hokies scored a run on Greene's two-out solo home run off sophomore Rylee Wyman. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
