BLACKSBURG, Va. --Junior Emma Lemley was dominant on Tuesday, striking out eight Virginia hitters over seven innings of work to help power the No. 13/15 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Cavaliers 6-1.
In addition to her eight strikeouts, Lemley (11-4) threw seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (36-9-1).
The win gives the Hokies half a point in the Commonwealth Clash, presented by Smithfield. The score for the Commonwealth Clash currently is 6.5 to 12 in favor of Virginia. For more information, visit hokiesports.com/clash.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of senior Addy Greene and a two-run single from freshman Annika Rohs.
The Hokies then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Cavaliers cut it to 4-1. Virginia Tech picked up a run on junior Cori McMillan's leadoff home run off, to break the program's team single season home run record.
Virginia Tech kept Virginia scoreless before building their lead to 6-1 the following inning. The Hokies recorded a run on sophomore Trinity Martin's leadoff home run off Layne. The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech coasted to the win.
