Virginia Tech falls to Louisville in first-round ACC game

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech's 2024 campaign closed on Sunday afternoon with a 13-11 loss to Louisville in the first round of the ACC Championship.

Led by Lauren Render's career day, which featured five goals, and a four-goal outing from Paige Tyson, the Hokies had their opportunities. Tech put 20 shots on goal, which is tied for the most against an ACC opponent this season (24, vs. Louisville on Feb. 24).

Kayla Downey had five assists to wrap up her illustrious college lacrosse career and capped her season total at 57, the most in a single-season by a Tech player.

Jocelyn Torres tallied another 10-save performance, all while facing 35 shots, which is tied for the fourth-most by an opponent this season.

The Hokies dominated the draw with Olivia Vergano pulling in eight along, along with Sarah Gresham, who had seven draw controls.

Tyson opened the scoring just over a minute into the game with the first of four connections between her and Downey. However, that would be Virginia Tech's only lead of the afternoon.

The sides exchanged goals for most of the first half, including a 6-5 mark in the second quarter, while Louisville's lead never extended past two goals.

It was a much more subdued effort in the second half, as neither team scored more than two goals in each quarter.

Nine second half turnovers doomed Tech, while Louisville had just eight total throughout the game.
