Let's take a look at which teams will be making the trek to Blacksburg this upcoming football season.

Marshall
Starting with a familiar opponent from 2023, Virginia Tech will face Marshall for the eleventh time in their series history. The Hokies traveled to Huntington, West Virginia, for their fourth contest of the 2023 campaign and fell short 17-24 to the Thundering Herd. The matchup now makes its way to Lane Stadium/Worsham Field as Tech looks to redeem itself from the road defeat. Marshall head coach Charles Huff announced several additions to his coaching staff for the 2024 season in early January, including the promotion of former analysts Aaron Dobson and Bob Shoop to coaching positions. Dobson, who served as an offensive analyst for the Herd, will now be coaching wide receivers, along with Cody Crill, who transitions from being a tight ends coach for the XFL's D.C. Defenders to an offensive line coach. Shoop will assume his position as defensive coordinator, taking over the safeties. These adjustments follow an inconsistent season, with the Herd dominating in the first couple of games but ultimately finishing 6-7, finishing in the 7th place slot among the Sun Belt East division.

Rutgers
Brent Pry and the Hokies will face a familiar program from the Big Ten after facing the Scarlet Knights in week three last season. Rutgers finished the 2023 season 7-6 and with a Pinstripe Bowl title following their 31-24 victory against the Miami Hurricanes. The Scarlet Knights had many players who contributed to their success, including returning running back Kyle Monangai. Monangai was the Big Ten's leading rusher in 2023, averaging 5.1 yards per carry and finishing the season with 1,099 rushing yards. He will be one of many impressive returning players for Rutgers, as four starters that make up Rutgers's No. 19 nationally ranked defense have announced their return, including linemen Aaron Lewis and Wesley Bailey and linebackers Tyreem Powell and Mohamed Toure. Virginia Tech still leads the series between the two teams 12-4, hoping to reinstate their 12-game win streak, which lasted from 1993 to 2012, after dropping last year's contest.

Virginia
As the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash returns to Blacksburg for the first time since 2020, anticipation builds for the historic rivalry between Virginia and Virginia Tech. Dating back to 1895, the Hokies lead the series 61-38 and boast a formidable home record of 25-9. Virginia has recently made adjustments to their roster, with head coach Tony Elliott announcing the official signing of four transfers the Cavaliers are adding to their 2024 class. This includes Clemson tight end Sage Ennis, New Mexico State quarterback Gavin Frakes, Robert Morris defensive back Jermarian Jackson, and Eastern Michigan defensive back Kempton Shine. These new signees will join Virginia's top performers from last year, including first-team All-ACC selection Malik Washington, who finished the 2023 season with a school record and ACC single-season record for receptions with 110 and 1,436 receiving yards. The Cavaliers will be searching to become a bowl game contender for the first time since 2019, after finishing 13th in the ACC last season.

Boston College
Boston College has been a consistent opponent for Virginia Tech, with the teams matching up every year since 1993. The Hokies currently lead the series 21-11, hoping to extend their two-game win streak against the Eagles after a dominating 48-22 win in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Boston College's offense features key players like quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who capitalized on his quickness and agility as a dual-threat quarterback, allowing the Eagles to operate in a different way. Castellanos earned a 77.8 PFF rushing grade, finishing with 1,108 rushing yards. The Eagles finished their 2023 season (7-6) with a win against newly added ACC opponent No. 22 SMU, 23-14, for the Fenway Bowl title.

Clemson
The Clemson Tigers finished the 2023 season ranked No. 20 in the NCAA (9-4); however, in terms of the ACC, the Tigers went 4-4 and finished sixth in the conference behind Virginia Tech. This will be the team's first matchup since 2020, which also took place in Blacksburg. Clemson has had a consistently formidable offense, which includes impactful players heading into the 2024 season like running back Phil Mafah. Mafah recorded 179 carries for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns, including setting a Gator Bowl record with four rushing touchdowns. He will be joined by two significant offensive additions, with Clemson landing five-star and four-star wide receiver recruits Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore. According to ESPN, these two are the No. 25 and No. 92 overall players in the 2024 class, hoping to replace wide receiver Beaux Collins, the Tigers' leading receiver, who transferred to Notre Dame. Clemson also finished No. 8 in total defense, which features linebacker Barrett Carter. The two-time All-ACC selection was the top linebacker in the 2024 CBS Sports NFL Draft Prospect Rankings and the No. 32 overall prospect, finishing second among Clemson defenders with 63 tackles, three sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech's new head coach will be entering his second official season with the Yellow Jackets, concluding his first season by elevating the program back to competency last fall. Georgia Tech visited a bowl game for the first time in five years, achieving a 7-6 record, including a 30-17 win against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl. Their performance last year brought forward many notable players, including Haynes King, who is tied for third in the ACC for passing yards and is recognized as one of the top running quarterbacks in the country, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). Running backs Dontae Smith and Jamal Haynes also had significant seasons, finishing with the ACC's top rushing attack. Virginia Tech currently leads the series with 11 wins, and Georgia Tech will be revisiting Blacksburg for the first time since 2022.
