Virginia Tech student-athletes open academic year with impressive marks

BLACKSBURG – The first half of the 2023-24 academic year is off to an impressive start for Virginia Tech student-athletes as final grades have been calculated – yielding yet another outstanding semester, academically.

The fall of 2023 set multiple benchmarks for Tech athletics:

  • Student-athletes earning Athletic Director Honor Roll honors
  • Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 4.0
  • Athletics Department semester GPA
  • Athletics Department cumulative GPA
  • Number of teams with a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher

Additionally, fall 2023 tied with spring 2023 and fall 2020 for the highest number of teams with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

These benchmarks were made possible through the tremendous work by Tech student-athletes and the commitment from Tech's Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

SAASS supports Tech student-athletes by providing comprehensive academic programming while also monitoring their NCAA eligibility. In addition, the SAASS team works in close partnership with each coaching staff to ensure student-athletes are achieving their full academic potential.

Led by director of student-athlete academic support services Sarah Armstrong, SAASS employs 15 full-time staff, three interns and a number of Virginia Tech students as mentors and tutors.

"I'm extremely proud of the work of both our student-athletes and SAASS team," Armstrong said. "The SAASS staff remains ever committed to the wholistic wellbeing of our student-athletes. It is rewarding to see our student-athletes exceed expectations each semester."

Over 73% (451) of Virginia Tech's 613 student-athletes during the fall of 2023 finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to earn Athletic Director Honor Roll distinction.

In total, Tech's 613 student-athletes combined for a 3.25 semester GPA.

Even more impressive was the fact that 242 Hokies finished with a GPA of 3.4 or higher to garner Dean's List accolades. Dean's list honors solely recognize the work of undergraduate students. Forty-three Hokies earned perfect 4.0 GPAs from both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Nineteen of Tech's 20 sports achieved a 3.0 or greater semester GPA. Men's indoor/outdoor track and field counts as one sport, as does women's indoor/outdoor track and field.

Among the men's sports at Virginia Tech, men's golf had the best semester in the classroom in the fall with a 3.64 team GPA. Women's soccer carried the banner for the female sports, earning a 3.63 semester GPA.
