PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Connor Burgess fired a 3-under 141 (70-71) and is tied for 17th through 36 holes of the ACC Men's Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,246-yard Shark's Tooth Golf Course. Virginia Tech opened Friday with a 3-under 573 (286-287) and is in 10th with 18 holes to play.
Tech climbed to as high as No. 2 in the standings late in the first round, but dropped off quickly when birdies were hard to come by.
Burgess had a pretty nonchalant morning round with only two birdies and no bogies. The second round started off with a bang as he carded four birdies in his first eight holes. One of the birdies included a two at the 231-yard fifth hole. Burgess moved to 4-under after his final birdie at the par-4 eighth hole, but gave three shots back over his last 10 holes to finish 1-under.
Hole No. 13 proved to be very good to the Hokies today as both Connor Johnson Jr. and Kobe Valociek both secured eagles in one of their two rounds on the day. Charlie Hanson carded an eagle of his own on No. 17, chipping in for a three to get back to even-par during his afternoon round. The sophomore finished at 1-under 143.
North Carolina leads all teams after the first two rounds with a combined 29-under 547. Georgia Tech (557), Virginia (562), Notre Dame and Florida State (565) round out the rest of the top four.
The top four teams at the conclusion of Saturday's round will move on to match play. Tech currently sits eight shots back of FSU and Notre Dame, who are tied for fourth.
In the individual race, a trio of golfers are tied at 9-under 135. Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman, ranked 16th in the nation, is tied with UNC teammates Peter Fountain and Ryan Gerard.
The Hokies will tee-off their final round at 10:00 a.m. CT and will be paired with Boston College and Duke.
