It will be an exciting next few days in Blacksburg for Hokie Nation as Virginia Tech's football, baseball, softball and men's tennis teams will be in action Thursday through Saturday, April 14-16.
The Virginia Tech athletics department announced plans earlier this year to hold its first-ever "Hokie Hi: Weekend at Home" event, an expansion of festivities held on campus in Blacksburg surrounding Tech Football's annual spring game, presented by PMSi.
For reasons to attend the highly-anticipated weekend, view below.
First Look at The New Football Team
It's a new era for Tech football and fans will be able to see their first glimpse of the Hokies under the direction of first-year head coach Brent Pry in a game setting, with the team playing its spring game at 4 p.m. ET at Lane Stadium. A new style for both offense and defense will be on display, as well as an intriguing quarterback battle that will get more clarity on who may be under center this fall. Tickets to the game ($5) must be purchased online in advance.
Both Baseball and Softball Are Ranked
Tech's two diamond sports have had great seasons so far, with softball currently ranked No. 2 in USA Softball/ESPN.com's poll while baseball sits at No. 21 in D1Baseball's latest rankings. The two squads, which have combined for 51 wins already this season, are coming off ranked series wins this past weekend and both beat Liberty this past Tuesday in convincing fashion.
3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance
The event on Saturday will begin with a moment of silence at 9:43 a.m. to honor and remember the vibrant lives of the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us in 2007. The event's 3.2-mile loop around the Blacksburg campus begins and ends on the Virginia Tech Drillfield near the April 16 Memorial and passes by landmarks such as the Duck Pond, the Grove, the Virginia Tech Pylons, and will take runners and walkers through Lane Stadium.
HokieBird Egg Hunt
Virginia Tech Athletics will hold an egg hunt on at the Moseley Practice Field across from Lane Stadium on Saturday at 1:15 p.m., with gates opening at 1 p.m. The HokieBird will be in attendance with over 1,000 eggs able to be captured.
Marketing Promotions
On Thursday at 7 p.m. at baseball's game against No. 2 Miami (Fla.), the promotion will be Boy Band Night. Fans are encouraged to wear matching outfits and choreographed dance moves and get ready for a night of classic boy band favorites! The giveaway will be a Hokies Band T-shirt for early arriving fans.
On Friday at 6 p.m. at softball's game against Virginia, a HokieBird egg hunt and holiday toys and candy will be given away.
Saturday will feature both softball and baseball having inflatables, the HokieBird, games and face painting, while there will be a BBQ food truck at baseball and Growley III at softball.
