Hokies rack up 13 blocks in 3-0 victory against Marist

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team totaled 13 blocks en route to a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-22, 25-19) against the Marist Red Foxes Friday at home at Cassell Coliseum.

The non-conference win improved Virginia Tech's overall record to 3-2 on the season and wrapped up a 2-0 Friday in Cassell.

Elayna Duprey finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Hokies attack. Logan Mosley also pitched in with five aces in the contest. Defensively, the Hokies got 11 digs from Maddie Slagle, along with seven blocks from Anabel Zier and six from Cara Lewis to lead the team.

How It Happened

The Hokies jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-11. Virginia Tech never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hokies took over the lead. Tech also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set and got a solid defensive performance from the middle blockers, blocking six Marist attacks in the set and capitalizing on 10 Marist attacking errors on the way to victory.

After the win in the first set, Virginia Tech took a 25-22 victory in set number two. The Hokies rallied after being down as many as eight points at 20-12 to win the set. Virginia Tech grabbed the lead at 23-22 and hung on for the 2-0 lead. The Hokies recorded five blocks in the second set.

Virginia Tech closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning set three. Impressive serving helped the Hokies win the set 25-19, recording six aces in the set three win. The Hokies opened up a 24-16 lead in the set and closed it out from there. 

The Hokies wrap up the Hokie Invitational tomorrow, taking on Old Dominion at 3 p.m.
