BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Virginia Tech volleyball team walked away with a three-set win (25-15, 25-21, 25-12) against the Western Carolina Catamounts Friday at Cassell Coliseum to close out the Virginia Tech Classic.
The non-conference victory improved the Hokies' overall record to 7-4 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home. Tech has not dropped a set in Blacksburg so far this season.
Sydney Petersen was named the MVP of the tournament, finishing the two matches with a .395 hitting percentage and 19 kills. She averaged 3.17 kills per set 20 points for the Hokies over the weekend, including two blocks. Cera Powell was also named to the All-Tournament Team. She recorded 24 kills over the two matches, hitting .296 with 4.00 kills per set.
In the win over the Catamounts, Powell finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Hokies offense, with a hitting percentage of .269. Maddie Slage had another solid game defensively, turning in 20 digs during the match. The Hokies recorded six blocks, with five of them coming from Amaya Roberson.

How It Happened
The Hokies took control on the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-15. Tech's offense got going early, hitting .394 in the first set, led by Powell who hit .300 with four kills. The Hokies also added three aces, as Brie Postema recorded two of those. Hanna Borer recorded seven assists in the first set.
Virginia Tech continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-21 victory in set two. The Hokies never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Hokies took over in the second half. The Hokie offense was spread across seven players who recorded at least one kill. Tech also recorded three blocks, as Anabel Zier and Roberson each had two block assists.
Virginia Tech then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three, 25-12. Tech put up an hitting percentage of .464 in the third, and held Western Carolina to a -.033 hitting percentage. Petersen and Powell each had three kills, while Slagle added eight digs. Borer and Postema helped out the Hokie attackers, with a combined 11 assists between the two of them.
The Hokies open ACC play next weekend, making the trip to Clemson for a Friday match against the Tigers. Tech continues the road trip on Sunday, heading to Atlanta for a matchup with Georgia Tech.
