BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Kelsey Bennett racked up four RBIs to help lead the No. 2 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Liberty Flames 13-9 on Tuesday. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to weather.
Sophomore Ivy Rosenberry (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (40-6). The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Freshman Emma Lemley also made an impact in the circle for the Hokies, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. She earned her third save of the season.
Bennett went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Hokies. Junior Morgan Overaitis hit a home run of the second straight game, a three-run shot in the second. Junior Meredith Slaw also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Bennett.
The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Hokies put runs on the scoreboard once again. Virginia Tech hit two home runs in the inning on the way to pushing six runs across. which brought the score to 8-2 in favor of the Hokies.
Liberty narrowed Virginia Tech's lead to 8-6 before the Hokies stretched the advantage to 11-6 in the third inning. Slaw's bases-clearing double sent in all three runs for the Hokies.
The Flames gained ground, closing the gap to 11-9 until Virginia Tech added some insurance in the sixth. The Hokies scored twice on freshman Bre Peck's two-run homer, bringing the Virginia Tech advantage to 13-9 when the game was called.
