BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech's Emily Mahar continues to cement her legacy as one of the Hokies' all-time greats, becoming the women's golf program's first-ever All-American Thursday afternoon, as announced by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
Mahar, who tied for 63rd at the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf National Championship last week, was one of 17 players named an Honorable Mention All-American. There was a 12-player first team, headlined by individual national champion, Rose Zhang of Stanford. The second team consisted of 11 players.
The Brisbane, Australia native concludes her Tech career as the program's all-time career scoring average leader (73.25), in addition to recording 60 par-or-better rounds, 10 top-5s and 17 top-10s.
Mahar set the single-round scoring record earlier this year at the Florida State Match Up when she fired a 7-under 65 at Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida. She also holds the 54-hole record of 203 (-7), which the grad student set in 2019 when she won the Princess Anne Invitational.
There was a stretch during the 2021-22 season where she charted four straight top-5 finishes, including the Columbia Classic where Tech won its first outright team title in program history.
In all, Mahar was a part of four straight NCAA regionals and two NCAA national championship appearances – one as a team and one as an individual.
Mahar intends on turning professional in the near future.
