Hokies geared up for Commonwealth Clash on Wednesday

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men's tennis hosts No. 8 Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in its final week of regular season play.

HOKIES
Last weekend, the Hokies picked up a noteworthy win on the road with a 4-3 result against No. 28 Miami. Scott Sculley picked up his first of two wins on the weekend when he won a three-set thriller to secure the victory against the 'Canes. 
 
The last time the Hokies and Cavaliers battled in Blacksburg, Tech earned its first win since 2003 against Virginia. Alex Ribeiro won the clinching match on Court 3 in three sets – 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) – to give the Hokies a 4-3 triumph.
 
CAVALIERS
Virginia enters Wednesday on a 12-match win streak that dates back to Feb. 20 against Washington at the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. The Cavaliers earned decisive victories against Florida State (4-2) and Miami (6-1) last weekend.
 
Four Cavaliers are in the ITA singles rankings released on April 6: Chris Rodesch (No. 19), Jeffrey von der Schulenberg (No. 28), Inaki Montes (No. 35), Ryan Goetz (No. 70). In doubles, Virginia has five different pairs ranked: Goetz/Rodesch (No. 7), Bar Botzer/Rodesch (No. 49), Goetz/Montes (No. 59), Montes/von der Schulenberg (No. 70), Rodesch/William Woodall (No. 71).

COMMONWEALTH CLASH
Following a halt during the 2019-20 academic year due to COVID-19 implications, the Commonwealth Clash has been renewed and has a new presenting sponsor in Smithfield. The Commonwealth Clash is a friendly, statewide rivalry between Virginia Tech and Virginia and their school-sponsored sports, with 22 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11.5 points or more has been annually crowned the winner and takes home the Commonwealth Clash trophy, presented by Smithfield.
