Virginia Tech men's soccer celebrating 50 years in 2021

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men's soccer plans to celebrate its 50th season of varsity competition with an alumni reunion the weekend of Sept. 24-26.

The Hokies host Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. to kick off a weekend that will celebrate the impact of all involved in the men's soccer program over the last 50 years.

In December of 1971, John Harves (Virginia Tech '74) approached the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Athletic Association in an effort to promote its club soccer team to varsity status. The "pitch" to administration was successful and in 1972, the Hokies fielded a team of 24 student-athletes, led by coach George "Chip" Snead, in its inaugural varsity season. The side originally played its games at the South Recreation Field before moving to the Thompson Field complex that houses the team to this day.

Since its varsity beginnings in 1972, the program has experienced plenty of success, much of which has happened since the turn of the century. The Hokies currently own one of the nation's longest NCAA Tournament appearance streaks (five) and made an appearance in the 2007 College Cup. One of the more monumental moments in the history of Virginia Tech Athletics occurred within the program in 2021 when Daniel Pereira was drafted No. 1 overall in the MLS Draft by Austin FC.

Along with recognition at the game on Friday evening, the program plans to host various events with the current team, staff, and alumni. In addition, the team invites alumni to join them at the Virginia Tech football game against Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 25.
