Hokies open season against The Citadel

Match Notes

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech volleyball team begins a new era with first-year head coach Marci Byers making her coaching debut at the Hokie helm versus the The Citadel on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. Coverage will be available through the ACC Network. 

Fan information: To follow the public health guidelines and ensure the safety of Virginia Tech's student-athletes, staff, and fans, all Olympic fall sports at Virginia Tech will compete without fans in attendance until further notice. Tech volleyball, men's soccer and women's soccer matches will be played without spectators, while only essential staff and family members of the student-athletes will be allowed in attendance.

The Hokies are returning six starters from 2019, including Kaity Smith, Anabel Zier, Cera Powell, Marisa Cerchio, Kylie Thomas, Talyn Jackson along with Libero Logan Mosley. Senior Cerchio finished her 2019 campaign with a team-high 312 kills. Returning sophomore Mosley concluded her first season breaking the freshman school record for most digs in a season with 507 on the year.

Tech has seven newcomers joining the 2020 squad, including five freshmen (Kirah Johnson, Brie Postema, Cierra Huntley, Mara Perry and Emily Campe) along with two graduate students (Ashley Homan & Tasha Vipond). 

Last time out in 2019, The Hokies concluded their 2019 season defeating North Carolina 3-2 in a five-set thriller with setter Talyn Jackson registering a triple-double of 46 assists, 10 kills and 16 digs. Tech finished its 2019 campaign with an overall record of 11-20 and 4-14 in the ACC. The Hokies open up conference play next with two matches against UNC on Sept. 24 & Sept. 25. 

The Citadel with second-year head coach Dave Zelenock at the helm began its 2020 season with a loss at Mercer 3-1 in four sets. The Bulldogs enter the Thursday match against the Hokies sitting at 0-1. The Citadel finished last year with an overall record of 11-20 and 4-14 in the Southern conference.
