BLACKSBURG – Signing with the men's Virginia Tech track and field team in November of 2019, Cameron Rose has had a blazing start to his high school senior season as the Harrisburg, North Carolina native has set two North Carolina State records and several U.S All-Time performances.
"My indoor season has been great so far," Rose said. "This season I didn't play football so for the first time I was able to put all my energy into track and the results have followed. I've showed great improvement which is a blessing and I can't wait to see what outdoor holds for me."
Coming into his first meet of the year with a North Carolina State record and U.S. No. 1 mark in the 300 (33.79), Rose ran a blazing time of 32.84 in the 300m at the VA Showcase on Jan. 17 to capture the US No. 2 All-Time in the indoor 300. In the event Rose bested sprinter Justin Robinson who ran a 44.84 400m last year and was the USATF and Pan-American U20 Champion.
The following weekend at the Clemson high school invitational, Rose broke his second state record and posted a top US All-Time Indoors performance as he clocked a time of 20.94 in the 200 meters.
His mark at Clemson broke Trentavis Friday's 20.97 North Carolina Indoor 200m State Record from 2014, gave him the No. 5 time in U.S. high school history and made him only the second North Carolina boy ever go under 21 seconds indoors and the 8th high schooler ever in the country to do so.
"Cameron is making the best out of his senior year," Virginia Tech sprints coach Tim Vaught said. "When I was recruiting Cameron I knew he had a huge upside for sprinting. When Cameron told me he was not going to play football his senior year to focus strictly on track, I had a gut feeling this could be a good season for him. Cameron's family has surrounded him with the right people and trainers to keep him progressing in the right direction. The team and myself are equally excited to have Cameron apart of our Hokie family. He's going to help continue our winning traditions here at Virginia Tech."
With the outdoor season just around the corner, there is no telling what amazing feats could be seen from Rose.
