Tech heads to South Bend with opportunity to notch tenth ACC victory

BLACKSBURG
 – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team (19-6, 9-5) will take its three-game winning streak on the road to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday, February 20.
 
The Hokies who feature the ACC's Freshman of the Week in center Elizabeth Kitley last played on Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest earning a 73-62 victory. Kitley scored a team-best 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season.
 


 
Taja Cole, who has set the program's record for assists in an ACC season at 73, continues to lead the ACC in that category with over 6 per game. During Tech's current three-game winning streak, she has averaged 12 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists and registered her second 20-point game of the season against Wake Forest.
 
Sophomore guard Dara Mabrey has climbed into a tie for seventh place with former teammate and All-ACC performer Taylor Emery with 146 3-pointers. After leading the league in 3-point percentage a season ago and setting a school record with 80 3's, the Belmar, New Jersey native has averaged 12.7 points per game this season.

THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame (10-16, 5-9) has lost two straight – both on the road, falling at Boston College 56-55 and then losing at league leaders Louisville 82-49 this past Sunday afternoon. The Irish's starting five all score in double figures led by Destinee Walker's 14.5 points per game.
 
The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 1-11 and have won all six meetings since joining the ACC.
 
NEXT TIME ON CARILION CLINIC COURT
•The Hokies are back at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, February 23 to play host to the Virginia Cavaliers. Tipoff on ACC Network Extra is set for 7 p.m.
•In the season's first meeting, Tech earned a 69-61 victory at John Paul Jones Arena behind a balanced offensive attack that saw all five starters record double figures. Dara Mabrey led the squad with 15 points, including a memorable 3-pointer from the logo as the shot clock wound down from an out of bounds play under the basket. The Hokies outrebounded the Cavaliers 41-30 and went 18-22 from the free throw line.
•That game will be Senior Day for the program as they recognize those graduates who have made contributions to the program.
