Tech travels to Boston, New York for ACC road swing

BLACKSBURG – Looking to bounce back, the Virginia Tech volleyball team will head to the Northeast for matches against Boston College on Friday and Syracuse on Sunday. 

 

The Hokies (9-16, 2-10 ACC) seek their 10th win on the season when they face the Eagles (17-8, 8-4). Tech will stay on the road when it faces off against the Orange (9-11, 6-7) in New York. On Wednesday, the Orange and Eagles played each other with 'Cuse winning in five sets in Chestnut Hill.

Last time out, Miami (9-11, 5-7) edged Tech 3-1 in back and forth match. The Hokies started off hot, winning the first frame 25-23. The Hurricanes would respond winning the next two sets to lead the contest going into the fourth set. In the fourth, it was knotted at 23-23 when the Canes rattled off two straight points to claim the match. 

 

Kaity Smith, a junior, finished with 11 kills and eight digs and setter Sarah Jane Lynch notched career highs in aces and blocks with two apiece despite the loss.  

 

The Hokies last road match was a 3-2 victory over Wake Forest (11-12, 1-11) in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Smith posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs against the Demon Deacons. Logan Mosley, a freshman, registered 27 digs in the win. 

 

Mosely ranks first in the ACC in digs per set with an average of 4.43, minimum 75 percent of team sets played, and Jackson is averaging 9.08 assists per set, which ranks seventh in the conference. As a team, Tech is fifth in the league for digs per set (14.50).

SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE

  • Boston College, before they lost to Notre Dame on Sunday, beat Louisville and lost to North Carolina. Boston College ranks sixth in the ACC.
  •  Head Coach Jason Kennedy enters his second season with the Eagles, following his time as an associate head coach at USC. Kennedy is 1-1 against Tech, winning the last matchup at home.
  • The Eagles are led offensively by Jewel Strawberry, who has had 298 kills this season and Amaka Chukwujekwu, who ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage with a .416 mark.
  • The Hokies trail in all-time series against the Eagles (18-8) falling in their last matchup in November 2018.

 
SCOUTING SYRACUSE

  • Syracuse, before defeating Louisville on Sunday, beat Notre Dame and NC State. Syracuse is ranked ninth in the ACC.
  •  Head Coach Leonid Yelin enters his eighth season with Syracuse, following his 15-year tenure at Louisville. Yelin is 4-4 against the Hokies, defeating Tech in the last three matchups.
  •  The Orange are led offensively by Polina Shemanova, who leads the conference in kills per set with a 5.06 mark.
  • Syracuse leads the all-time series 7-5 against the Hokies and has a three-match winning streak that dates back to 2016.
