BLACKSBURG – Head coach Tony Robie announced Wednesday that Massachusetts standout Jack Darling and Christiansburg heavyweight Andy Smith have officially been added to Virginia Tech's 2019 recruiting class.
Darling finished his career at Masconomet High School with a record of 212-14. He won two all-state championships, finished No. 1 in the state at 132 pounds and was a three-time NHSCA All-American with two third place finishes.
Smith won 2019 Virginia 3A state championship at 220 pounds a year after placing second at the state tournament. He finished the season ranked No. 1 in at 220 and No. 5 in the VAWA pound-for-pound rankings.
Tech is bringing in a consensus top five recruiting class next season. Intermat and FloWrestling ranked the Hokies' 2019 haul fifth in the country and The Open Mat slotted them at No. 4. The rankings by all three websites were the highest of any team in the ACC.
Darling and Smith join incoming freshmen Bryce Andonian, Connor Brady, Sam Latona, Dan Mancini and Brandon Wittenberg in the class. Four of those five signees finished in the top 100 of FloWrestling's Class of 2019 Big Board.
