BLACKSBURG – After taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against No. 8 North Carolina and recording his first complete game as a Hokie, Virginia Tech starting pitcher Ian Seymour has been named one of nine Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week powered by Diamond-Sports and one of five pitchers named to the squad.
Seymour was two outs away from Tech's first no hitter in more than 30 years as he shut down North Carolina batters for more than eight innings. Seymour was perfect through the first two innings and faced the minimum until the ninth thanks to a double play turned by Tech that erased the lone UNC batter to reach base – by a walk in the third.
After the free pass, Seymour retired 19 straight Tar Heel batters until Danny Serretti legged out an infield single with one out in the ninth – a play so close the umpires went to replay for verification. With two outs, Serretti scored on the third UNC hit of the inning to break up the shutout as well, but Seymour registered his first complete game with the effort adding six strikeouts.
The Westborough, Mass., native improved to 4-0 with the victory and is 7-3 in his career at Tech in 19 starts. For the season, he leads the team in wins, innings pitched (33.0), strikeouts (36) and is one of four pitchers in the ACC with a complete game this season.
Freshman Chris Gerard, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning earlier this year at No. 1 Florida State (March 9), also garnered National Pitcher of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball.
The last known no-hitter thrown by a Tech pitcher was Jon Hartness, a nine-inning no-hitter versus Utica College on March 18, 1984 (a 1-0 victory).
