CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the fifth time in six games, the Virginia Tech baseball team reached double figures in runs scored and the Hokies turned an early deficit into an 11-3 victory over Marshall at Appalachian Power Park Wednesday evening while cruising to its sixth win in seven games.
In the contest, Tech took advantage of a trio of Marshall errors and more than a dozen walks to score in five straight frames after the second to turn a two-run Marshall advantage into an eight-run win. They also used strong bullpen outings from seven pitchers to hold the Thundering Herd to just one run over the final eight innings.
Tech (15-6), who left 15 men on base on the night, including four in the first two frames, finally broke through in the third. Kevin Madden scored Kerry Carpenter with a sacrifice fly, and Nick Owens used an RBI double to bring home Carson Taylor, which tied the game at 2-2.
The Hokies scored an unearned run in the fourth that broke the tie and added two more in the fifth when Nick Menken knocked in Reagan Teegarden with a single and then would come around to score on a wild pitch.
However, it was a four-run sixth inning that finally saw Tech take command of the night. The Hokies had the bases loaded half a dozen times in the game and left them loaded in in second and third. This time with two outs and the bags full again, Nick Biddison cleared them with a double and gave his team a 9-3 lead.
Owens and Teegarden both added an RBI in a two-run seventh, scoring Taylor and Luke Horanski, which provided the final runs for the Hokies
Marshall (12-7) scored the day's first runs on Shane Hanon's third home run of the season. The two-run shot gave the home side a 2-0 advantage. They'd add their third run of the game on back-to-back two-out doubles by Erik Rodriguez and Tucker Linder in the fifth.
A total of eight pitchers were used by Tech, with Jaison Heard tossing a team-high 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, while Jack Dellinger and Zach Brzykcy each struck out the side in their inning on the mound.
Tech notes
Tech holds a 27-9 overall mark against the Herd and that now includes a 4-1 mark since the teams renewed the rivalry in 2017 and a 3-0 mark under head coach John Szefc.
On the road, Tech has a slight edge in the series at 8-5
