Hokies head north for two games this week, at Pittsburgh and Boston College

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team heads to the frigid northeast this week for two games, first taking on the Pitt Panthers on Thursday, Jan. 31 and then continuing the road swing at Boston College on Sunday, Feb. 3. 
 
The Pitt matchup can be found on Regional Sports Networks, and the Hokies' clash with Boston College will be available on ACC Network Extra.

SERIES HISTORY
The Hokies lead the series with Pittsburgh 8-5, including last season's 89-66 victory at Cassell Coliseum. Five Hokies were in double figures, led by Taylor Emery who tallied 22 and Regan Magarity who scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds. 
 
Tech's first meeting with the Panthers came in 1980. The clubs have met regularly as members of the Big East (2000-2004) and now in the ACC (2014-present).  
 
NOTABLES ON THE PANTHERS 

  • The Panthers are led by first year head coach Lance White, who spent the previous 15 seasons as an assistant at Florida State. 
  • Pitt has struggled to score the basketball this season, ranking last in the conference at 56.9 points per game and are also last in scoring margin (-6.8).
  • Senior forward Danielle Garvin leads the squad in points at 9.8 points per game, while sophomore center Cara Judkins is the Panthers' top rebounder, pulling down 5.9 per contest. 
  • Against common opponents (Notre Dame, NC State, Syracuse and Virginia), Pitt is also 0-4, falling by an average margin of 33.5 points per game. Tech's margin was 11.0 in those games.

Tech holds a 14-12 advantage against the Eagles in the all-time series which dates back 1989. 
 
The Hokies have won the past two meetings and three of the last four, which includes Kendyl Brooks' career-high 23 points her freshman season in 2017. She knocked down 7 of 12 shots from beyond the arc tying the school record for 3-point field goals in a single game.

  • The Eagles are also led by a first-year head coach, Joanna Barnabei-McNamee, who previously spent two years as the head coach at Albany.
  • Emma Guy leads three Eagles in double figures scoring at 13.1 points per game. She is also the club's top rebounder, securing 6.9 boards per game. 
  • As a team, the Eagles are shooting .438 from the field, the fifth-highest mark in the conference.
