Hokies sign two women's golfers to NLIs

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech women's golf coach Carol Robertson announced the signing of Becca DiNunzio and Alyssa Montgomery to National Letters of Intent to join the Hokies for the 2019-20 season.

"These freshmen are coming in on the heels of the inaugural seniors departure," Robertson said. "We are excited about the future of this program and the tremendous role they will play in our success as we continue to build."

DiNunzio comes to Virginia Tech from Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia, where she is a four-year letter winner for head coach Timothy Maynard. At Granby, she was the team's most valuable player all four years and had two top three finishes at the VHSL Girls State Championship. She was the 6A Region Champion and the conference champion as a senior. She also was a two-year letter winner in swimming.

She qualified for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Women's Four-Ball championship and was a member of the Virginia team in the 19th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls' Matches. She finished fifth in the 2018 VSGA Junior Girls Championship.

Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society. She is an AP Scholar with Honor and is an International Baccalaureate Program candidate.

She is the daughter of Robert and Pamela DiNunzio. Her brother, Bobby, is a competitive, age group swimmer in Virginia with state records and victories in state championship events.
 
"Rebecca continues to excite us with her love of the game, academic success and overall work ethic." Robertson said. "It is easy to see her potential and what she will bring to the table within our program and University."
 
Montgomery is a senior at Central High school in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she is a four-year letter winner and team captain.  As a freshman, she was the district champion, TS SAA Region 2 champion, and finished sixth at state championship. As a sophomore, She repeated as TSSAA Region 2 champion and finished fifth at the state championship tournament. She was named to All State team.
 
In her junior year, she was the district champion and set the scoring record, with a 68. She won her third consecutive TSSAA Region 2 championship and finished seventh at the state championship.  As a senior, she won the district championship and won her fourth consecutive TS SAA Region 2 championship and finished third at the state championship.  Also, she set the TSSAA Region 2 scoring record with a 65 as a freshman. She is the only golfer, boys or girls, to win the region tournament all four years.
 
Montgomery won the 2016 National Drive, Chip and Putt Championship 14-15 age group and had nine AJGA Top 10 finishes. She has two AJGA championships, including the Under Armour®/Scott Stallings Championship. She was named an honorable mention AJGA Rolex Junior All-America.
 
The daughter of Kenny and Angie Montgomery, Alyssa is a member of the National Honor Society at Central High School and also is a two-year letter winner in bowling.
 
"Alyssa has really begun to show the depth in her game and ability to score and compete at a national level," Robertson said. "Coupling her athletic ability along with her academic success makes her a great fit for our women's golf and Hokie family."
