Seufer, Freix with strong performances at Penn State National Open

Virginia Tech runners Peter Seufer and Sara Freix each recorded top-10 finishes to headline the Virginia Tech cross country teams' performances at the Penn State National Open held Friday morning in State College, Pennsylvania.
 
Seufer, a redshirt junior from Lynchburg, Virginia, finished second, running the 5.2-mile race at the Blue-White Golf Course in a time of 24 minutes, 49 seconds. He finished nine seconds behind James Sugira of Eastern Kentucky, who won with a time of 20:40.
 
Behind Seufer, the Tech men's team came in eighth place out of 21 teams in the team competition with 240 points. Redshirt freshmen Bashir Mosavel-Lo and Ben Fleming had top-50 finishes for the Hokies, with Mosavel-Lo coming in 44th with a time of 25:47 and Fleming coming in 46th right behind him with the same time.
 
Freix, a junior from Centreville, Virginia, came in sixth, running the 6K race at the Blue-White Golf Course in a career-best time of 20:44. Behind her and Lauren Berman, who came in 25th with a time of 21:11, the Tech women's team finished 12th out of 28 teams.

OTHER NOTES
• Freix's previous career best time was 20:58.6, which she set at the Adidas Pre-National Invitational last season.
 
• Ellie Brush's time of 22:08 marked her career best for the 6K distance. Cate Stone's time of 23:16 also marked her career best for this distance.
 
• Fitsum Seyoum just missed getting into the top 50 at this meet, coming in 58th with a time of 26:00.
 
• Kayla Richardson was the closest remaining Tech women's runner to nearly break into the top 50, finishing 69th with a time of 21:39.
 
UP NEXT
Both Virginia Tech squads return to action Oct. 26 when the Hokies travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for the ACC Championship. The women's 6K race starts at 10 a.m., with the men's 8K race starting at 11.
