Top Notes for the Hokies (link to Game Notes pdf packet)
The Hokies welcome the Cavaliers and Panthers to Thompson Field for ACC matches
- It will be somewhat of a rare occurrence this weekend as both Virginia and Pittsburgh visit Blacksburg as this will be the first trip to town for Virginia since 2014 and only the fourth over the past 13 seasons (there's been 13 meetings - seven in Charlottesville, two in Cary, N.C.).
- This is the fifth all-time meeting between Tech and the Panthers, with three of the four matches being played in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Panthers lone visit to Blacksburg was in 2015, a 4-2 victory for the Hokies.
- See more on Tech's history versus these two opponents on page 2 of the game notes.
A Commonwealth Clash point is up for grabs
- Building on a tradition started in 1895, the Commonwealth Clash is a head-to-head points-based competition within the 22 varsity sports in which Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia compete against each other. At the end of the season, the institution with the most points is crowned the champion of the Commonwealth Clash.
- Thursday's Women's Soccer match between the Hokies and Cavaliers is also presented by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics and the University of Virginia Athletics. To learn more about Virginia529 and the competition click the following link (www.thecommonwealthclash.com).
- Virginia Tech has won the Commonwealth Clash the last two seasons, while the current score of this year's Clash is Tech 1.0 - Virginia 0.5 - the team's both received a half-point for the Men's Soccer tie and Tech earned a half-point for a Volleyball win.
Three milestones reached this season
- Not only did Sunday's win at Miami give the Hokies a much-needed three points, it also gave Tech head coach Chugger Adair the 100th victory in his coaching career. His overall mark is 100-42-18.
- With its 3-0 victory at Villanova on Sept. 7, the Hokies chalked up their 250th career win in program history, reaching the milestone in its 505th overall match.
- Tech opened its 26th season of women's soccer with a pair of draws against San Diego (8/17) and then-No. 22 Georgetown (8/19). The Sunday match against the Hoyas was the 500th match in school history. In those first 500 games, Tech held a 247-210-43 overall record.
A difficult stretch, but that's the ACC
- Four of the next five opponents for the Hokies are ranked, but not just ranked, they are in the top 15, while both Clemson and Louisville are currently receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
- All-time, the Hokies are 28-79-13 (28.7 win percentage) against ranked foes, but have been slightly better under Adair over the past eight seasons at 15-33-7 (33.6).
- Tech has not beaten a ranked foe since Oct. 4, 2015, at No. 7 Duke (4-2) and are 0-9-5 since.
- Their last home win over a ranked team was Sept. 19, 2014, No. 17 Clemson (2-0) and are 0-6-4 since.
