Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech volunteer assistant coach Ty Walz will return to campus with a bronze medal after going 3-1 at the Medved International in Minsk, Belarus for the United States National Team.
For Walz it's his third medal in international competition after winning bronze at the 2017 U23 World Championships and a silver medal at the Cerro Pelado in Cuba. The Medved was Walz's first tournament competing with the U.S. senior freestyle national team.
In the second period of the bronze medal match, Walz was trailing 2-0 late to Olympic silver medalist Valerii Andriytsev of the Ukraine. After multiple shots, Walz was finally able to get to a leg and secure a takedown with 10 seconds, giving him a match-clinching 2-2 lead on criteria.
On Friday, Walz defeated China's Chaoqiang Yang in the first round, 7-1, but lost by tech fall to evental silver medalist Fatih Yasarli of Turkey. Walz was pulled back into repechage after a win by Yasarli, setting up his 3-1 decision over Rashid Kurbanov of Russia in his first match on Saturday.
A three-time All-American and two-time ACC champion with the Hokies, Walz was one of eight American men on the U.S. National Team to travel to Belarus this weekend.
