Five Hokies were recognized on the 2018 All-Academic Team; Mary Claire Byrne, Kelly Glatthorn, Tristan McGinley, Meagh Graham and Paige Petty.
Byrne, an academic senior majored in public relations and plans to enroll in grad school at Tech while competing in her redshirt senior campaign in 2019. Byrne started all 21 games for the Hokies in midfield, scoring 27 points (17 goals, 10 assists). She had 52 ground balls and caused 32 turnovers, the second most in the conference. The McLean, Virginia native also tallied one game-winning goal and grabbed six draw controls.
Glatthorn, a senior from Norristown, Pennsylvania graduated in May with a degree political science and dual minors in economics and Spanish. A First Team All-ACC performer in 2018, she started all 21 games for the Hokies. She recorded four points from one goal and three assists as a defender. On the circle, Glatthorn corralled 50 draw controls and also recorded 16 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls on the season.
McGinley, a senior from Moorestown, New Jersey graduated in May with a degree in human development will attend grad school at Drexel's accelerated nursing program.
McGinley who was included in the ACC's First Team for the first time in her career, helped lead the Hokies to their best season in program history in 2018. She tallied 51 points, including 48 goals. Her 96 draw controls broke her own school record for most in a single season and vaulted her to third all-time at Tech. McGinley scored two game winning goals, including the crucial strike as the Hokies defeated Syracuse at home in double overtime in early April.
Graham, a grad student in educational curriculum and instruction recorded all 14 of the Hokies' wins in goal, making 155 saves and holding a .412 save percentage. She finished her career with the most ground balls in program history with 192.
Petty, a freshman from Bernardsville, New Jersey earns her first nod on the team. She studies criminology. Petty started every game she played in during the season, leading the squad in goals scored (58) and tallying 65 total points. Her 25 goals in conference play led the ACC. The midfielder also tallied 65 draw controls and 29 ground balls on the season.
Petty's 2018 season is undoubtedly the best by a freshman in Tech history and perhaps the best period. Her accolades include; First team All-ACC, First Team All-South Region, Second team All-America, VaSID Second Team and now an ACC All-Academic nod.
