Virginia Tech falters, 4-3 to Georgia Tech

CARY, N.C. – The 31st-ranked Virginia Tech men's tennis team faltered on Thursday, 4-3 to Georgia Tech during the second round of the 2018 ACC Men's Tennis Championship in Cary, North Carolina.

Virginia Tech (17-7) got out to an early lead as the Hokies claimed the doubles point. No. 36 Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro made quick work of the Yellow Jackets' 20th-ranked pair of Carlos Divar and Michael Kay, defeating the pair 6-2 at one.

The Hokies clinched the point on court two where No. 60 Carlo Donato and Mitch Harper paired up for the 6-3 win over Elijah Melendez and Chris Yun.

Virginia Tech moved to a 2-0 lead as Ribeiro rolled past Phillip Gresk in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1 on court three. The Yellow Jackets (8-16) claimed the match on court one, but Korsgaard gave the Hokies a 3-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Melendez on court four.

Georgia Tech won the next two singles to tie it up, leaving the deciding match at six. The Hokies' Freddy Mesmer gave up the first set to Andrew Li 6-3, but the junior rallied to win the second 6-2. In the final set, Li outlasted Mesmer to clinch it 6-2.

The Hokies now await their postseason fate with the NCAA Selection Show slated for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1.
