Virginia Tech middle distance runner Hanna Green, who wrapped up her collegiate career at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in early June, was named the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced Wednesday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
The announcement marked the second time this season in which Green earned a top ACC academic honor. In April, she received the ACC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in his/her respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the past two semesters.
Green enjoyed a tremendous outdoor track and field season in which she won gold medals in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs at the ACC Championships, lifting the Hokies to their first team title since 2008. She set a meet record with a time of 2:01.28 in the 800 and later took the silver medal in the 800 at the NCAA Championships after taking silver at the NCAA’s indoor meet as well. She finished her career as a six-time ACC gold medalist and a six-time All-American.
In the classroom, the Latrobe, Pennsylvania native achieved a 4.0 grade-point average for the fifth consecutive semester while earning dean’s list honors. Green, who graduated in May with a degree in interior design, is eligible for her fourth selection to the ACC honor roll, which will be announced in July, and is a member of Virginia Tech’s All-Academic Team, which includes the top student-athlete academically in each varsity sport at Virginia Tech.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade-point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career.
Twenty-one members of the Virginia Tech track and field program made the All-ACC Academic Track and Field Team, including 12 from the men’s team – the most among league schools. The list includes the following Tech athletes:
