Bjerrehus, Contini named to All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini were named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Bjerrehus recorded a 17-5 tally in duals with a 13-5 mark at the two. He represented the Hokies in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships. In addition to his singles’ success, Bjerrehus has ranked in the top-25 in doubles throughout the spring and currently sits at 17th with an 11-4 record in the one with teammate Monteiro. Outside of Tech, Bjerrehus represented his native country of Denmark in the Davis Cup this year.

Contini tallied a 15-7 record this season with a 10-6 mark at the three. At the ACC Championships, the Hokies’ deciding point against FSU in the quarterfinals came down to Contini on three where he trailed 4-1 in the third set before rallying to win 7-6(2). With the win he helped Tech advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history. In the fall, Contini was runner-up at the ITA Atlantic Region in doubles and represented the Hokies at the ITA All-American Championships.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
