Stockton moves into 3-meter finals at Winter Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Kelli Stockton of the Virginia Tech diving team advanced to the finals of the 3-meter Springboard on Thursday evening to pace the H2Okies at the 2013 USA Diving Winter National Championships.

After scoring 262.50 points in the morning’s quarterfinals to take eighth place and advance to the semifinals, Stockton racked up a cumulative score of 507.20 to finish 12th and move onto Saturday’s finals.

Of the 33 competitors in the quarterfinals, 18 moved onto the evening sessions, while just 12 advanced to the finals.

Junior Kaylea Arnett, still nursing an injury from the previous day, tallied a score of 230.30 in the quarterfinals to take 23rd place.

Ryan Hawkins, the sole Virginia Tech male competing in Austin, reached the finals of the 10-meter platform. The senior scored 331.60 in the morning quarterfinals to move into the semis, and advanced past the evening session with a cumulative score of 605.40.

Arnett is the only H2Okie scheduled to compete in tomorrow’s session, which consists solely of synchronized events. The junior will be competing with Emma Villarreal, a 2014 Virginia Tech signee, in the 3-meter synchronized preliminaries, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
