Hokies to face Duke in first road ACC series

Game notes in PDF

The weekend series: The Hokies continue their 120th season of baseball this weekend against the Duke Blue Devils in a three-game ACC set at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Facing the Blue Devils: Tech enters the game with a two-game winning streak at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, after taking the final two versus Duke in a three-game series there in 2011. The Hokies won 6-5 in 10 innings on Saturday before blanking the Blue Devils on Sunday, 9-0.

However, Duke won all three meetings last year in Blacksburg, taking Friday’s and Sunday’s game by identical 5-3 scores sandwiched around a 13-0 win on Saturday.

Home (state) away from home: During the 2013 season, Tech is scheduled to play 28 games at English Field, a good sign, because entering the season the team had a .659 winning percentage in its 24-year history and have had just two losing seasons at their home.

Of their 28 road games scheduled, the Hokies are playing in the state of North Carolina 16 times, which included a 4-0 start to open the season and a 3-1 mark in the third weekend. The Hokies are getting used to the I-81 to I-77 road trip, as they are currently in the midst of a five-game road trip, going just 1-1 in the first two games.

The other locations Tech will travel to include three games each in the state of Florida, Maryland and Massachusetts, while playing two others in Virginia and one in Tennessee.

The 28 games in North Carolina does not include any games in the ACC Championship, if the Hokies advance, which will be played in Durham.

All-time in the Tar Heel State: With its 8-2 mark in games played in North Carolina so far this year, Tech has improved its overall mark to 159-177-5 (47.7 percent) in the state. However, they are just 14-31 in games played against ACC opponents.
