GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six members of the Virginia Tech lacrosse team were named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse team, as announced by conference commissioner John Swafford on Wednesday morning. Senior captain Allie Emala led the way for the Hokies, as she was honored for the fourth time in her career, while juniors Jessica Nonn, Julie Wolfinger and Ryan Rotanz, along with sophomores Brooke Martin and Kristin Semones were also named to the academic squad.
Maryland’s Laura Merrifield was named the Women’s Lacrosse Scholar- Athlete of the Year, while Duke placed a conference-leading nine student-athletes on this year’s team, leading all six represented institutions.
Emala, a Baltimore, Md., native, tacked on another post-season honor as she wrapped up her Tech career as one of the most accomplished offensive players in program history. The human development major was named the team’s co-MVP this season after leading the squad in goals with 43, points with 59 and draw controls with 60 in her final season. She leaves Tech as the all-time draws leader (248), while also ranking second all-time in goals (138) and points (187).
Nonn, the only other repeat honoree for the Hokies is named to the conference academic team for the second time in her career after pacing the team with 24 caused turnovers this season. The psychology major was additionally among team leaders in scoring with 38 goals, points with 50 and draw controls with 43. Nonn, from Catonsville, Md., also scooped up 34 ground balls this year.
Wolfinger, a marketing major, earned the team’s Coaches’ Award this season after transitioning to defense from midfield and started all 18 games. The Finksburg, Md., native quietly made a major impact on Tech’s defensive unit this season while scooping up 24 ground balls and causing six turnovers.
Rotanz, a Salem, Va., native, moved into a full-time starting role this season, missing just one start while playing in all 18 games at attack. The human development major scored 25 goals this season, also tallying 28 points and picking up 10 ground balls.
Martin, a native of Hunt Valley, Md., put away 12 goals and assisted six more as she saw time in all 18 games, starting 10. Planning to major in communications, Martin also tallied 18 points and grabbed 20 ground balls as an impact player on attack.
Semones, a native of Westminster, Md., led the team with 35 ground balls and tied for second on the squad after causing 17 turnovers. The university studies major was an important piece to the Hokies’ success this season as she rarely left the field in her first year as a full-time starter.
