WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Shanel Harrison’s three-point basket at the end of regulation and total domination of the second overtime led Virginia Tech to a thrilling, 94-78, victory over William & Mary Saturday afternoon in Kaplan Arena. Tech improved to 6-4 with the win while the Tribe fell to 1-7.
Tech found itself down, 71-65, when Aerial Wilson (So., Cocoa, Fla.) nailed a three-point basket with 45 seconds left in regulation. After the Hokies got a defensive stop, Shanel Harrison (Jr., Washington, D.C.) nailed a trey with only 3.4 seconds remaining to force the game into overtime.
The teams battled evenly through the first extra session when Alyssa Fenyn (So., Newark, N.Y.) was fouled with two seconds left and the game tied at 76. Fenyn, who had made 10-of-12 free throws on the year, uncharacteristically missed both charity tosses to force a second overtime.
Tech completely dominated the second extra period by opening with a 14-0 run and coasted to the win.
Harrison scored a career-high 25 points, including a career-best three treys, to lead the Tech attack. Nikki Davis (Sr., Lexington, Ken.) recorded the first double-double of her Tech career with 16 points and a career-best 12 assists. Monet Tellier (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) had the first double-double of her young career with 14 points and 10 boards as did Fenyn with 10 points and 10 rebounds. LaTorri Hines-Allen (Fr., Montclair, N.J.) was the fifth Tech player in double figures with 10 points.
William & Mary was led by Katherine DeHenzel and Kaitlyn Mathieu with 18 points each followed by Taysha Pye’s 14-point effort. Emily Correal and Taylor Hilton added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Hokies jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead forcing William & Mary to call two time-outs in the first four minutes of the game. Four Tech starters scored in the flurry led by Harrison with five points as the Hokies connected on their first five attempts.
However, Tech cooled off and William & Mary got into an offensive mode to outscore the Hokies, 37-17 for the remainder of the half to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room. The second half saw the Tribe build a 12-point advantage, before the Hokies began their late-game comeback.
The Hokies will return to action on Tues., Dec. 21, when they host Radford in a 7 p.m. game in Cassell Coliseum.
